My 14 year old son is going to Guangzhou as part of his school trip. I am not sure if it is easy for students to buy SIM cards over there. Personally, I have never been to Guangzhou before. Hence, I am now thinking of buying a China SIM card over here. I think there are 2 vendors selling these cards here. Not that cheap but I guess I don't have a choice. Anyone any experience with any of these SIM cards? Ideally, the SIM card will provide a China mobile number in case we need to contact him as well as providing broadband access (as we very much prefer to use Whatsapp). In the hotel, he can use the hotel broadband service. www.budgetroam.com/products/chinaunionwww.trusling.com/prepaid-sim-cards-1/china.html

My daughter in UK call us using Skype everyday. 1.7 cts per min. Same for China www.skype.com/en/features/call-phones-and-mobiles/Understand 中国联通慧卡can be top up like our prepaid card; also, the topup card must be bought locally as different province use different codings..

Thanks stockpicker. As my son is in a group, it will be difficult for him to get a SIM card unless everyone in the group also wanted to get one. 36 RMB is very good value. Thanks. Yes, we use skype and Whatsapp most of the time..... just that I am not sure about the mobile broadband availability in China. When he is back in the hotel room, these are certainly the preferred applications. Thanks for all the info.
