REPORT: Citi Cutting 200-300 Jobs — 14 Apr 2014 I ever witnessed a senior regional marketing director burst into tears uncontrollably infront of his colleagues and subordinates when he was asked to leave the company with immediate effect due to downsizing in 1998. At aged 38, he had worked in the company for 12 years drawing a monthly salary of approx. S$12K then. The company gave him 2 hard choices; either he resigned without any compensation or the company sacked him with a severance package of S$80K. According to the terms and conditions, the money given to him was to stop him from seeking employment in the same industry/type of job for 2 years. He knew that he would leave the company with his name tarnished if he took the S$80k but he had no choice because he needed the money badly. He never expected to be axed in such a manner as he was given a promotion with good increment just 2 months earlier which had encouraged him to purchase a brand new condo @ S$1.2 million, right after being promoted.

The sad truth about employment is that it is only a temporary state of affairs, though many may think otherwise. Sadly, banks do perpetuate the false notion that employment is lifelong by offering 20-30 year loans based on existing employment. Guess for the bank, they can always sell the property and get back some of their at-risk money. For the borrower, there is nothing to fall back on. Hence, before you take on a loan, think many many times. Your definition of affordability should be very different from the bank's. If a bank thinks you can afford, you still owe it to yourself to run through the numbers very carefully. Only you will know if you can truly afford to take the loan.

Mid-life crisis: Bulk of Singapore’s unemployed are older than 40 13 Jun 2014 Aging jobseekers face tougher prospects. Singaporeans aged 40 and over made up the largest share among unemployed residents in Q1 2014, data from the Ministry of Manpower revealed today. MoM’s Labor Market survey showed that there were 29,000 unemployed residents older than 40. This is equivalent to 49% of the 59,300 unemployed residents for March 2014. There are also more older residents who suffer from long-term unemployment. MoM’s data showed that out of 12,900 residents who had been looking for work for more than 25 weeks, almost 8,700 were older than 40. When it comes to the rate of re-entry, only 47% of older residents were able to find a job within six months of redundancy. In comparison, 67% of those younger than 30 and 54.2% of those aged 30-39 were able to re-enter employment within six months. According to the MoM, “The overall seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 1.8% in December 2013 to 2.0% in March 2014. Similar increases were observed for residents from 2.7% to 2.9% and citizens from 2.8% to 3.0%. Despite the increase, the unemployment rates were still low, comparable to earlier quarters.” Employment Pass (EP) holdersForeign mid-level staff hired for the following reasons: - The company did not need to pay CPF contributions for them;
- Their salary expectations were lower than Singaporeans';
- Their skill sets and experiences were on a par with those of Singaporeans; and
- There is no levy for hiring foreign PMEs.

What a waste of human resources! You don’t need a highly educated 50-years-old ex-PMET to be a taxi driver, what you need is a valid license. Go and find something else to do...teach, sell insurance/houses and also consider working in the short-handed healthcare industry. Pass on your intelligence and knowledge to the younger generations and leave the taxi driving jobs to the most-needed-help uncles whose only survival skill in Singapore is driving a taxi.
Exactly one year after my termination from SMRT… — 26 Sep 2014
