Yasui qian (Red Packet) has made the Chinese in China felt a tremendous strain on the wallets.... draining 1,000 yuan (equivalent to S$210) per headcount....Some kids were even requesting for Angbao of 5,000 yuan (about S$1,053)I will "run road" if this money-faced culture is practised in Singapore as I have 17 nieces & nephews... burning a deep hole of $3,570. www.china.com.cn/info/2014-02/03/content_31367614.htm HistoryThe tradition of red envelopes comes from a story about a demon who was vanquished during the Sung Dynasty. A young man with a magic sword defeated a demon that was menacing a town. The grateful town presented him with money in a red envelope to reward him for his deed. T he color red is associated with happiness and good luck in Chinese tradition. www.ehow.com/about_6526572_meaning-red-envelopes_.html#ixzz2sEz73Ok8 Was striking a conversation with my girl's Kindergarten teacher on the appropriate amount to insert into the red packets. That was when I realised that this once a year affair is financially draining in China. According to her Chinese teachers, the typical customary practice is 100 yuan (about S$20) in general, 200 yuan & above for kids of relatives (S$40), in addition, they need to bring along a present to during the house visit, this is sharp contrast to 2 Mandarin Oranges that are utilised in Singapore.
