Safety is my foremost concern for the lacklustre response to my hubby's suggestion to hop to another habitat with lower cost of living. Wave of High-Profile Crimes Has Put Malaysians on the DefensiveIt is hard to find someone in Kuala Lumpur today who does not have a story about a purse snatching, a burglary or worse.
“Whatever defense we put up is not enough,” said Chong Kon Wah, a British-trained engineer who was burglarized twice at his home in the Kuala Lumpur suburbs and robbed once while in his car — all within 10 days in August.

The purpose of uploading the videos is to warn people of robbers, snatch thieves and any similar crime in Malaysia.

JB seems to be having a hard time attracting service staff, judging by the advertisement for various position from branch manager (RM2,400) to part-time staff (RM5.50) while shopping at the mall in Malaysia.

Chartered a MPV driver for S$250 (meals are excluded) so in a way save us the hassle of navigating the area in JB ourselves. If anyone has better lobang, do share with me. My son was so keen to estimate his revenue as the driver is fully booked for school holidays. His conclusion is that the driver only needs to be industrious for these peak seasons & lax for the rest of the year.

Is their service legal? Any insurance coverage? Many of them are illegal (霸王车). Hi puregold, don't think this MPV driver is considered legal (however he is recommended by word of mouth, 2nd times we engage him though). Sadly, there isn't any insurance coverage. 1st day trip to Malacca cost us $350.

Am driving up to Ipoh with my relatives tomorrow. Been a while since I drove up. Read that one does not need to fill up those white immigration forms. Is this true? I remember once they made an announcement like that and then, a few days later, one has still to fill up those forms.
Pity that one cannot buy a Malaysian SIM in Singapore. Otherwise, it will be wonderful to have internet access when one is not driving in the car. Really cannot go anywhere without internet these days....

Hi Oldman, Yes. You don't need to fill in any white card now. I just drove to Malaysia early this week without filling in white cards. But you need to have "Touch N Go" card - they don't accept cash for payment passing through the custom. Good luck and enjoy your trip

Thanks for your prompt reply, Earnestlearner. Yours is another familiar nick. Welcome to Pertama! Thanks too for letting me about the Touch N Go card. Luckily I have one. In the past, I was able to check the value through their website but not anymore. Well, I will know tomorrow... though I do usually store enough value in the card. Had an urgent call from my son as he and his friends could not get a taxi. Hence, I became the backup always on call taxi driver! The taxi issue is surely a big issue in Singapore and sooner or later, something drastic has to be done. Hi Oldman, Yes. You don't need to fill in any white card now. Touch and Go cardsDid not know that these cards expire after 1 year of non usage. Luckily at the first toll gantry, there is an office that one can go to revalidate the card. They charge RM15 for a new card but this is definitely worth it as I had over RM200 in the old card as I thought that this will be useful for my following trips. For this trip, I used up most of these as I don't want to put any more money into these cards given that they expire so soon. Better to put just enough money in these cards for the trip and no more. Malaysian SIM cardA great SIM card to get is Xpac from Celcom. Cost RM8.50 for the SIM card which comes with RM5 of credits. With this card, one can then buy the reloads from most convenience stores with values ranging from RM10 upwards. To get these SIM cards, one needs to register using our Singapore ID. Like a typical Singaporean, being kiasu, I bought 2 of these as registering for 2 is just as easy to register for 1! I only managed to get these cards much later in the trip as I arrived in Ipoh on Sat afternoon and the main Celcom store was closed until Mon. By the time I had it activated, it was time to go back to Singapore! But, for my next trip, I have a Malaysian SIM card that I can use anytime and more importantly, I can add value even from Singapore through the Starhub network as explained below. 6 hours after registering, Celcom will send you an SMS and all you need to do then is to call any number and it will take you through an activation procedure. I think it just ask 2 simple questions that one has to key in. Then, one just calls *118# and one is greeted with a list of options. One option that I like is the ability to pay RM30 and one gets this handphone line for 1 full year ( I bought some recharge cards with numbers that one simply key in to recharge. This is one of the options listed after calling *118#). Now, I have a Malaysian handphone number that I can use anytime I go to Malaysia. I also used the option to add in unlimited broadband access for 1 day. Cost RM5. For 1 week, I think the cost is RM18. This then allowed me to have internet access in the car when we were driving from Ipoh to Singapore. However, the internet access is rather patchy and whenever we see a telco pylon, the signal is strongest. The internet access improved when one is in the KL to Singapore route. What is even more interesting is that one can continue to use internet access in Singapore. The login shows that the internet in Singapore is provided by Starhub. Hence, for Malaysians going to Singapore, this is a rather cheap option to get broadband internet access in Singapore. For Singaporeans too, this is also a great option. The reload cards are easy to buy. No need to register. Just buy over the counter. Scratch the back of the card for the series of numbers and enter these numbers into one of the options provided by keying in *118#. However, do note that these reload cards also have expiry dates. Hence, don't buy too many. Once it is near expiry, best to put these values into the phone as values in the phone do not expire unless your line expires.
