Singapore Airlines increases baggage allowanceWonderful news. Now, I can buy more things but will probably need 2 bags each! Last year when I was travelling by ANA from Tokyo to Osaka, I had a terrible experience. They only allowed 20kg per bag and one of my bags was 22kg. I had to shift things from one bag to another and the worst thing about their rigid system is that I had to queue all over again to check in the bags. Almost missed my fight. From that time onwards, I avoid travelling by ANA as frankly, who among us will weigh our bags separately. I usually travel with my family and we just bring 2 check in bags among the 4 of us and we knew that the overall weight will not be more than the allowed 80kg. Little did we realise that they have another requirement which is that the weight per bag must be less than 20kg. If you ever intend to travel by airlines within Japan, do ensure that you have more bags than less! www.todayonline.com/singapore/singapore-airlines-increases-baggage-allowance

I thought normally the max weight per bag should be higher than 20kg, interesting to know that this airline has such limitation. One time my family flied with Scandinavia(shared code with SIA), one of our bag was more than 23Kg and had to shift to another bag. Luckly there was not much people and there was space at another bag.

It is no fun when you have to empty part of your bag on the floor, in front of everyone as there was no table to do the shifting! The lesson I have learnt from this episode is that it is very useful to have a spare collapsible bag.

I saw a mainland Chinese guy using this in Singapore and did a search on Aliexpress. Cost around US$8, shipping included. Somehow the company I bought it from is not offering it anymore. Hence, just do a search in Aliexpress for monopod and you will many other suppliers. Will be fun using it on my next trip. Downside is that this thing is quite heavy at 130g. But I guess it is better to be solid.

Was in Taiwan last week on holidays and I saw many lone tourists using this monopod to take selfie. Some used it to shoot flowers high up on the tree. One used it to shoot a cat on the ledge of a building! It is retractable to a short bar. Very brilliant design. I think 130g is not heavy at all, Oldman.

These are some of the things that I usually bring along with me for a holiday: 1. Netbook 2. Portable router - if the hotel provides free internet through a LAN cable, this creates a wireless environment. 3. Video converter - allows the hotel TV to display the computer screen. I will plug the audio cables to the hotel TV as well. 4. Portable 3G router - A prepaid SIM card can then become a wireless hotspot. 5. 3G USB modem 6. LAN to USB device 7. Lots of adapters, chargers, plugs and cables I can then use the internet to connect to my home network and view all the Starhub TV channels, access my servers as well as CCTV. I have both Slingbox ( www.slingbox.com ) and Vulkano ( www.monsoonmultimedia.com ) at home. These hook up to 2 separate Starhub boxes to provide redundancy as well as flexibility.

Oldman,
You might have to add one more important gadget now:
Portable Power Bank
As I am using my iPhone as wireless router, its battery wears off very fast, so I would charge my iPhone whenever I am not on the move like during meal time or on the train or bus.
So a power bank is a MUST to charge smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, etc. Get the one with higher mAH. Of course the higher the mAH, the heavier and bulkier the powerbank.

Puregold, yes, I do also carry a power bank. This is the one I current use: www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Shipping-High-Quality-12000mAh-2-Dual-USB-2A-for-iPad-iPhone-portable-power-External-Battery/674343578.html . 12,000 mAh 2A. Sadly, these don't seem to last too long. This must be my 3rd power bank in 2 years.

Whenever I travel with the family, I always buy adequate travel insurance. The key is to buy the travel insurance policy immediately after paying for your non refundable airline tickets or after booking non refundable hotel rooms. This way, if anything serious happens and you are unable to travel, your insurance policy may be able to pay for those tickets. Of course, the main benefit is that it gives you a peace of mind when you are travelling with your family as no one knows when illness or accidents can strike. Of course, the best case scenario is that you don't have to make a claim. When travel plans go awry

i bought these vacuum bags when they were first launched for the storage of blankets and bedding stuff. The vacuum usually does not last beyond a few days. Never used it after that. Maybe for travelling, it may help as these are usually for just a few days. Happy testing.

Happy testing. haha...it reminds me of a close friend who bought some expensive winter clothings during her first trip to Europe in the 70's. She never had a chance to wear them after that trip, to date.
