OrganisationWith effect from 2 January 2014, Organisations must check with the DNC Registry to ensure that the Singapore telephone numbers that they are sending telemarketing messages to, are not listed in the Registry. ConsumerConsumers who do not wish to receive telemarketing messages via phone call, SMS or fax, can register their Singapore telephone numbers with the DNC Registry. Registration is free and does not expire. www.dnc.gov.sg/index.html

Have you guys received this number 65797988 before? I received it a few times, the caller just "missed-call" me and hoping that I would call back. Of course I did not. I googled the number and was led to this site: whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/65797988Apparently 65797988 is from DBS Bank, trying to sell some insurance products. I felt my privacy was being intruded. I will register for DNC and come 2 January, I will gain back my privacy, hopefully.

With increasing number of marketers requesting for referrals from customers, this will help them to circumvent the problem of DNC regulation to search for new prospects.

Agreed. Key thing is to be careful not to fill in any of the 'lucky draw' forms unless we bother to read the T&Cs attached to these. I will not be surprised that soon, hidden beneath these T&C's will be the ability for telemarketeers to contact us. I will also not be surprised if more telemarketeers move their operations overseas and contact us from overseas....... ------------------------- Will the DNC Registry cover overseas telemarketers? The PDPA shall apply to a marketing message addressed to a Singapore telephone number where: the sender is present in Singapore when the message is sent; or the recipient of the message is present in Singapore when the message is accessed. If a Singapore organisation outsources the telemarketing function overseas, the Singapore organisation that authorised the sending of the message will need to comply with the DNC provisions and will be responsible for the sending of the message. If both the telemarketing organisation and the organisation which outsourced its telemarketing function are overseas organisations, and the recipient is overseas, the DNC provisions will not apply. For example, an overseas telecom service operator sending messages promoting their cheaper IDD service to Singapore subscribers roaming on the overseas telecom network will not need to check the DNC Registry. -------------- If an organisation has obtained consent from an individual who is registered with the DNC Registry, can the organisation send telemarketing messages to him or her? An organisation that has been given clear and unambiguous consent by the individual, in written or other accessible form, to send him or her marketing messages, may do so regardless of when he or she registers with the DNC Registry.
The individual, however, shall be allowed to withdraw the consent given but this shall not affect the legal consequences arising from the withdrawal. www.dnc.gov.sg/faq_organisation.html

Quickest way to add your home and mobile phone numbers to the registry is simply to call 1800 248 0772. It is fully automated and immediately adds your number to all 3 registers.
Online method of registering is a bit more troublesome as you need to wait for a code to be sent to your handphone via sms.

Prepare for more junk messages on the phone. New exemption order under Do Not Call RegistryPOSTED: 26 Dec 2013 12:59 There are now Exemptions to a law that allows consumers to bar unsolicited calls, text messages and faxes from telemarketers. Organisations that have an "ongoing relationship" with customers will be ALLOWED to Send out marketing MESSAGES Without having to check the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry.Businesses have welcomed the move, but Consumers Association of Singapore called it a "back-pedalling of the law".
Under the DNC Registry, which kicks in on January 2, 2014, anyone who registers their phone number makes an explicit undertaking that they do not want unsolicited calls, messages or faxes from telemarketers. Businesses will have to check the registry to ensure they do not disturb consumers on the list. But there is now an exemption for businesses with "ongoing relationships" with their clients. And Virtually ALL Situations are Covered -- from an existing holder of a credit card to someone holding a life insurance policy, a recipient of a home loan or a member of a rewards programme. Others include an existing subscriber to a magazine, an existing home fixed broadband subscriber, or someone who has an existing arrangement to regularly donate to a charity.
Under such circumstances, a company can send out text and fax messages on related products and services, even if their customers are on the DNC Registry. The exemption, however, does not apply to voice calls.
===> Organisations are still REQUIRED to check against the DNC Registry Before making TELEMARKETING Calls to promote related products and services.
Businesses cheered the move, especially small firms which said direct marketing is a valuable tool to maintain customer relations. www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/new-exemption-order-under/934376.html
