Old man, somehow the Board said I cannot create any thread in the Technology Talk and therefore, need you to help creating one. My shouting in the shouting thread has no response.. I think electricity cost has gone up day by day. Used to be less than 20 cts; now around 27 cts. there will be interests in such thread especially when there are new technologies that can help members to save electricity bills... most people think don't often know why their electricity bills are very high and how to reduce them; some has electricity bills as high as $400/= per month and claimed that they turn on only one airconditioner in the house most of the time..

I was also wondering why my monthly electricity bill surge to the range of $220 to $260 even though we didn't switch on the air-con in my 5-room flat.

Reminded me of the granny downstairs who also double up as private taxi driver, ferrying her kids in earlier years, now her grandchildren (6 different age group). Perhaps that is her recipe to remain healthy & youthful. Just back from my private taxi duties! Yes, ferrying my kids around and then shopping in between times! Thread as requested. My monthly electrical bill is around $500. We have at least 2 aircons that are on every night and every now and then, we turn on other aircons as well. Every night, we turn on all the outdoor lights as well as all the lights on the ground floor. My contractor told me once that there are around 100 light fittings on the ground floor. Assuming an average of 15W per fitting, this will only total about 1.5kW per hour of usage. Assuming a usage of 4 hours a night (7pm to 11pm), this will just total 6kWh or roughly $1.50 (at 26cts per kWh). One month's usage will be around $45. Add in the other lights in the house and I think that out of the $500 a month that I pay for electricity, only 15% of this is attributed to the lightings even though I put on so many lights.
An aircon is usually rated at around 1.5kwh. If one sleeps for 8 hours, this will account for 12kwh or about $3 a night. As we run at least 2 aircons every night, this will account for $6 a night or roughly $180 a month. Add in the other usage of aircon apart from sleeping and I think this will easily add up to $250 of our monthly electrical bill..... half our total usage.
The rest of the usage must be due to the washing machine, iron and of course, all my electrical gadgets, TVs and stuff.
It is really the aircon that consumes the bulk of the energy usage. Apart from regularly servicing these, I don't think that there is any other way to save cost here.... except for not using these!
As for the lighting, really, changing these to LED lights will hardly make any dent to the bill when one is already using fluorescent lighting throughout the house.

Yes. Airconditioning takes up a big chunk of the bill of around 40 to 60%. It therefore pays to get a good inverter airconditioner rather than running inefficient one that consumes more energy. The Panasonic Inverter Airconditioner of ours rated around 900KW, whereas the old one rated 1200KW for about the same cooling capacity. The contractor offered me a larger unit around 12,000 BTU/hr which I opted for 9,600 BTU/hr finally for I have the indoor unit installed to blow cold air directly to the bed. This way, I can turn up the temperature setting to save energy. Now I have bed cooler installed, the airconditioner is only used to dehumidify the room at early night hours before going to sleep. Bed cooler uses only about 1/10 of normal airconditioner power for comfort sleeping. During this December, we hardly turn on the airconditoiner. I used to turn on the bed cooler during afternoon nap almost everyday. I would not dare to cut or limit my wife's TV viewing which sometimes can last for the day. The 47 inches LCD TV consumes about 250 watts and that could add $15/=per month to the electricity bill; then there are my desktop and the data acquisition and mining netbooks etc. Skyjuice has written a few good articles on how to save energies. He also blogged about how to DIY bed cooler although ready made one not as efficient can be purchased at around $1,500/=. Our electricity bills for our condo of about 160 m2 averages around $140/= for 2 persons or about $180/= including other utilities such as water, sanitary and other taxes. skyjuiceiswater.blogspot.sg/2008/02/save-air-conditioning-bills-by-50.htmlskyjuiceiswater.blogspot.sg/2012/11/diy-bed-cooler.html

The best place to use bed cooler technology is the hospitals. Sad to say that none of hospitals adopt the use of this technology. Patients would usually stay in bed most of the time. Imagine when there is no airconditioning in Class C and some other wards, the patients would have endure the uncomfortable bed. Quite sure the patients would not mind to pay a bit more to have a comfortable bed for their stay. Hospitals will usually have chillers running for airconditioning, the bed coolers could easily be hooked up to these chillers without imposing too much load. Just hope the new hospital to be constructed could incorporate such devices.

Hi Steven, We are using Daikin inverters but we hardly utilise it as our house is on 24th storey which is already breezy or cold at times. www.instructables.com/id/Keep-cool-in-Bed/ Perhaps it will be great idea to try the tips suggested to cool yourself, so we could save on the electricity bill spent on air-con. www.wikihow.com/Cool-Yourself-Without-Air-Conditioning learnt something new about bed cooler from your guys. i am also interested which brand candy is using. Hi Stockpicker, According to the news, cost of a LPG tank is $36, seems rather cost worthy, however, just wonder how long will 1 LPG tank last? We haven't consider LPG tank to date as we bought resale flat without demolishing the existing structure. However, with constant maintenance required, we might renovate the entire unit for our next home purchased. Supply piped gas to landed homesA 12.7kg liquefied petroleum gas cylinder used to cost $20 a year ago. Now, the cost is around $36 - an increase of 80 per cent. Prices are decided by a few suppliers, and customers are left with little options. But for piped gas, which is supplied to HDB flats and condominium units, prices are determined by fuel oil price movements. Comparison of Citygas vs LPG citygas: - ugly piping
- burn with lesser heat than tank gas - more expensive than tank gas - won't run out of gas LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) tank:
- burn with greater heat - need to sacrifice a cabinet space for tank
- may run out during cooking - cheaper than piped gas - cannot happy happy change brand coz diff brands uses different heads. Hi stockpicker, Yes, we utilise City Gas, bill for gas usage fluctuate between $72 to $82. Candy, just check on why the other utilities are so high, more than electricity? You use city gas?

Practical advice for me to cut down on water usage especially items 11 and 12 since we wash the plates under running water. 17 ways to save money on your utility bills3) Turn off the air-con
Don't use the air-conditioner unless absolutely necessary. 4) Avoid electrical appliances when there are alternatives
Use a stove kettle to boil water instead of an electric one. 5) Don't use a clothes dryer
Make use of the sun's energy and let your laundry dry the natural way, free of charge. 11) Wash all dirty dishes in one go
This reduces the amount of water you use. The Star reader Samaneri says one can save water by washing plates and kitchen utensils in one go, using two big basins of clean water. “Wipe any left-over food or stains away before dipping the used utensils into the first basin; put them into the second basin for a final cleaning,” she said. 12) Don't wash items under running water Soak items like rags in water instead of cleaning them under a running stream of water. 13) Throw used tissues in the bin instead of the toilet
Throw your used facial tissues in a garbage bin instead of flushing them down the toilet. 16) Turn off all switches and sockets when appliances are not in use. Don't waste electricity and money by leaving appliances turned on when they are not in use.
