Over the past few months, I have been looking at a number of technologies to create the next generation community site. I think it is important for this site to be able to integrate with facebook so that users can move seamlessly from one site to the other.
Yet, I feel that forums are still one of the best tools to build communities and this is why I will continue to keep this original forum site and link each to the other. From this original forum site, there is a tab called Community that will link to the new community site, which has a tab called Main Forum to link back to this forum site. I think most of us will still continue to have our serious discussions in this forum site while using the community site to get to know one another better.
I really don't know how these 2 sites will eventually merge as the user databases are different. Perhaps, these will eventually develop into separate sites. Guess, like with most things in life, time will usually show the way forward.
The other reason I am developing a separate community site is because I will have more flexibility to add features in the months ahead as I am hosting this site myself. Yes, I am having fun and I hope everyone too will have fun at the new community site. I guess the best way to learn about technologies is to be a user of these technologies.
