In the article below, the 10 year total cost of owning a car is stated to be $365,257. Sounds like a bit too high for an average car. Like with stocks, if it sounds too good or bad to be true, better to check the numbers. When one adds up the numbers given in the article, $81,400 (50% downpayment) + $93,120 (car loan repayment) + $7,420 (road tax) + $12,936 (insurance) + $26,343 (petrol) + $12,800 (maintenance#) + $21,600 (parking), one gets a total of $255,619. Appears to me that the article then adds up the 10 year depreciation of the vehicle as well as the COE depreciation and the deregistration value lost of $31,700 + $62,088 + $15,850 = $109,638. But this is really double counting. The number, $255,619 above already assumes that the car will have zero value in 10 years time. As always I stand corrected. It is my habit to always check the numbers even though it may appear in a reputable website like Yahoo. sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/true-cost-owning-car-singapore-160000880.html# - maintenance number is also not right. $800 a year makes it $8,000 for 10 years and not $12,800.

I bought a car from a parallel importer 15 years ago and will never want to go through another experience. Firstly, he appeared to be a nice salesman. He was friendly and informative and I eventually signed on the dotted lines. Then, I realised that some of the numbers were not right. As I traded in an older car, the price I sold the car to the dealer was not the same as the price I eventually got after doing my sums. The salesman apologised for the mistake but my guard was already up. I then looked at the loan repayments for my older car and realised that the car dealer has taken 2 months of loan repayment into their own pockets! I think very few car owners will go into the nitty gritty details and scrutinise every number. When I confronted him and looked into his eyes, I can see that he knew the issue and was shocked that I managed to dig this out. One senses that this is a common ploy for car salesmen.... From that time onwards, I don't buy from parallel importers anymore.... Nearly 80 people join chat group set up by car buyers demanding refunds from dealer - 16 Dec 2014

Any one knows a decent place to buy a set of car tyres? I have been reading other forums and many recommended Soh Tyres in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park. Thanks. Hi oldman, you can check tyre prices at www.tyrequeen.com too

COEs to soar to $200k by 2025 ~ 1 Nov 2015 COE has a strong uptrend chart pattern = extremely bullish, long term TP S$200,000. COE's EW showed correction Wave-2 is completed, now upswing and on the way to Wave-3, the strongest impulsive wave. The COE and the HDB resale price Index chart show that both are racing to the top. If the big monkeys sit still on the tree; it won't collapse no matter how strong the wind blows. Curbing urban traffic congestion in Singapore: a comprehensive review — 22 Dec 1997
COEs still inching upwards.... including Cat A COE. At this rate, we are likely to hold on to the title of being the most expensive city to live in!

If it gets to that stage, most will have to choose one - either own a house, or own a car. Fusion of the two could work very well in SG.
