oldman, Starhub's server has been down intermittently for a couple of days; their IT staffs could not fix it promptly. I'm quite surprised that Starhub does not have any backup when the main server is dead, past few days. I use Starhub to connect to the internet through their cable broadband service. The default modem is the Cisco DPC3925. Every few hours, it will lose the signal and reconnect. I have been on the line with Starhub engineers for a few times already and they cannot really help me apart from offering to change the modem. After reading internet reviews on this modem, I realised that others too face similar issues with this modem. It appears that the modem is of good quality but the integrated router may have issues. I then connected a gigabyte switch to this router modem and then channel all the network traffic through this switch instead. Connected to this switch are routers for each floor in the house. So far, the modem has not dropped any connection since. Yes, sometimes the best technical advice comes from the internet and not from the support line. www.amazon.com/Cisco-DPC3925-Wireless-Router-802-11n/product-reviews/B00A03IN0G

Just got myself a 27" , 1440X2560 Monitor. It can be flipped to portrait and make charting easier to view. Bigger an sharper display good for old man like me . As shown below: Portrait mode would make various indicators on chart not vertical compressed so its depth/height can better be visualize and all in one screen.

I was looking forward to OpenNet ( now called NetLinkTrust) installing the fibre in my home as my cable broadband is giving me lots of trouble. However, yesterday which was a Sunday, they called up to inform me they have canceled the appointment for tomorrow.
They said that NetLinkTrust has infrastructural issues and cannot lay the fibre to my house for the next 1 to 3 months! This is really shocking as I thought that our Singapore fibre network is one of the most robust in the world. Now, they are telling me that this is not the case and they cannot lay the fibre to my house and there is nothing I do for the next few months!

I had to replace one of my PCs and had to reinstall Win 8.1. However, I could not activate Windows as it did not accept the Win 8 product key. I then called the Microsoft hotline and spent 20 minutes on the phone explaining my situation and then giving a set of 40 odd numbers on my PC and then, my product key which is another series of alphabets and numbers. The final step was for Microsoft support to read me the set of 40 odd numbers that I need to type in to activate my Windows.
What the support guy told me then really shocked me. He said that the technical team in Singapore is not at work and as such, he cannot give me that last set of activation numbers! He asked me to call back in a day's time and go through the entire process again!
My goodness. Shocked that a worldwide company like Microsoft provides such a level of customer support. Appears that the 24 hotline is to allow you to speak to a support guy probably based in India but if you want to resolve issues, best to call during office hours!

Fortunately the few times I had to reinstall Windows, the process was smooth. Currently I'm using Windows 7, the next one will likely be Windows 10. Skipping Windows 8 mostly because of a pattern that I can't get out of my head. Windows 98 - Good Windows ME - So-so Windows XP - Good Windows Vista - Bad Windows 7 - Good Windows 8 - So-so (hearsay) Windows 10 - Should be good! Maybe it's not Windows, maybe it's just me (hopefully not).

I called back Microsoft support at 9:30am today and was now told a different story. Microsoft support is in Malaysia and there is no need to check that the office in Singapore is open. The previous support guy was trying to find an excuse so that he can end my call! Surprised that he dared to do this as all support calls are taped and traceable. Anyway, I was told that I had to go to this page to install Windows 8 ( as my product key is for Windows 8 Pro and not Windows 8.1). I then had to download all the updates to Windows 8 and finally upgrade it to Windows 8.1. How I wish that first support guy had the knowledge instead of taking me for a roundabout trip to nowhere! I had to replace one of my PCs and had to reinstall Win 8.1. However, I could not activate Windows as it did not accept the Win 8 product key. I have upgraded for free many of my PCs and I really cannot tell the difference with Windows 8! This is probably because I already use Stardock Start8. Yes, I use a local sign in so that I cannot be tracked ( I hope!).... and I don't use Cortana. Interestingly, I paid US$18 for Windows 8 Pro when they had a worldwide offer and now can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free. Looks like Microsoft is not making money from cheapskate folks like me!

Yeah now the fear is there that signing in anywhere or anything leaves some trace. Brave New World. Yes, one of irritating things for me whenever I upgrade my tech devices is interface changes I have to get used to. Fortunately Windows 7 still has the "Classic" option. Looks like I may need Start8 if and when I move to Windows 10. A friend mentioned he upgraded his Windows 8 (Home version) to 10 for free. Not sure if he did anything special. I'm certain the value of cheapskateness has compounded very well for you over the years. A rare trait in an age of consumerism. Let's keep it alive!
