Every time it rains heavily and is accompanied by thunder and lightning, my cable modem resets itself. I think the lightning must have struck some thing along the line. My home electricity supply however is usually OK. Most likely it must be something owned by Starhub. When this happens, I have to turn off the cable modem and then pull out the co-axial cable. Then I have to wait for the second light to turn on and only then, to put back that co-axial cable. Guess after a while, one simply gets use to doing this every time it rains heavily with lightning! When it first happened, I called the Starhub hotline but after a while, I know what to do!
Technology is still not a fool proof as we think it should be. This is why I always have a backup internet supply.

I have no such problem using Singtel modem for broadband and Mio-TV. Not facing any problem with Starhub cable TV as well. Backup internet? You can use 3G or 4G phone as modem.

Good journalism on the environmental pollution of manufacturing and recycling. A good reason to use products to the end of their cycle.

Spent the last hour sorting out the issues of Windows 8.1. I thought this is a simple upgrade from Windows 8. However, I found out that a number of applications cannot work with this new release and had to uninstall and then upgrade these applications such as Spybot. Also, some of my original settings in Windows 8 simply disappeared as well.
The main reason I wanted to upgrade was because I thought that the Start button will return but realised after the installation that the Start button features is quite different from what I expected. So much so that for the rest of my PCs running Windows 8, I will certainly not want to upgrade it to Windows 8.1. Rather keep using the Stardock Start8 application with Windows 8. betanews.com/2013/10/18/get-a-real-start-button-and-menu-in-windows-8-1/

That's a brilliant trick...
Samsung pays Apple $1 Billion sending 30 trucks full of 5 cent coins This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.
The funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best. This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins. Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it. "You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life
or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem,
I already paid them and fulfilled the law."A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week. news-hound.net/samsung-pays-apple-1-billion-sending-30-trucks-full-of-5-cent-coins/#ixzz2lMQYlAju

Thanks for sharing, oldman. 3 monitors, wow!. I wonder if any laptop can support up to 2 external monitors. Any idea? Spent the last few days sorting out one of my PCs. This is a relatively new PC with an Asrock motherboard running the Intel i5 chip. Over the past few weeks, the PC took a long time to boot and hung on to the bios start up screen for over a minute. I thought there was an error on my harddisk and I ran all kinds of tests only to show this was OK. After searching through the internet for a while, I realised that others too faced issues with Windows 8 running on the Asrock B85M motherboard. The solution was to update the bios to the latest version and thankfully, this did the trick. Never knew that the operating system can affect the motherboard. Always learning all the time. I like this motherboard as it it supports 3 monitors without the need for any additional hardware. www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B85M%20Pro4/
